I love the idea of it, but when the program doesn't even recognise phenol as a chemical, then there is something very wrong!

You need to download the chemical structure, the cml file, of phenol for add-in to recognize. You may use opsin and pubchem web services to import that and save to gallery. After that you can import to any of your document.

Did you try downloading CML for phenol using OPSIN or PubChem?

The OPSIN and PubChem services serves the purpose of getting CML file for those chemistry terms who don't have CML available when you install the Add-In
You can also go through the UserGuide given in the Home page to understand it better.
